The Welsh have celebrated many Christmas traditions throughout the centuries.
The Mari Lwyd is a decorated horse's skull, carried on a pole by a man draped in a white sheet. He goes door to door around the village, together with a band of merry men. They then sing songs in Welsh upon reaching a house and a singing battle ensues. If the Mari wins then the whole band is invited into the house and food and drink is passed around.
